Born in Castile near Avila (Spain) in 1515, Teresa and her brother loved the idea of becoming martyrs so much so they ran away from home to the land of the Moors only to be found by an uncle who returned them to their worried mother. Teresa's mother died when she was 14. Her father took her to a convent. She returned to her father because of a serious illness. When she was well, she went to the Carmelites and became a nun. With a great deal of struggle, she reformed the Carmelite order. She wrote several deeply spiritual books and is one of the great mystics of the church as well as one of three female doctors of the church.
Quotes from Teresa of Avila's writings:
"Let nothing upset you. Let nothing startle you. All things pass. God does not change. Patience wins all it seeks. Whoever has God lacks nothing. God alone is enough. It is love alone that gives worth to all things."
