Annunciation (Rublev) Icon, 3x3.75"

This historic Russian icon depicts the Annunciation from Luke 1. Having recently visited the Holy Priest Zechariah announce the birth of St. John the Forerunner, the Archangel Gabriel proclaims the good news of Christ’s imminent conception and birth. The Virgin Mary receives the news with surprise, but at her amen (let it be), the Holy Spirit descends upon her (symbolically depicted as a dove). This is the moment at which she became the Theotokos (the God-bearer)

Painted by the master Russian iconographer Saint Andrei Rublev in the early 15th century, this icon captures the glory and humility of this pivotal scene in the life of the Church and world.
