The educated St. Philip plays a relatively minor role in the Gospels, but his actions as a disciple while Jesus was alive show his practical nature and logical mind. He is commemorated on November 14.

He was close friends with the Apostle Bartholomew, and the two of them spent their ministries together, along with Philip’s devout sister Mariamne. The three of them went great distances to perform signs and miracles, putting themselves in danger of persecution so they could teach and heal in God’s name. St. Philip was martyred in Hieropolis, a city in Phrygia.

In his icon, St. Philip holds a scroll in one hand and gives a blessing with the other. He is wearing red and gold. All of these details point to  his holy role as an Apostle, and its significance to the Church.

This icon was painted by Fr. Theodore Koufos of blessed memory. Offered by permission.
