This historic Byzantine icon of the Crucifixion is from St. Catherine's Monastery at Mt. Sinai, Egypt. This icon records Christ’s triumph in vivid color and loving detail. Among other mourners and soldiers, the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) and St. John keep watch underneath the cross of the Beloved. 

Part of one of the oldest collections of icons and religious art in the world, these images from St. Catherine’s have followed and helped shape the canons of how icons depict saints and events.
