At that time, Jesus went out with his disciples across the brook Kedron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. Judas, his betrayer, also knew the place, because Jesus had often gathered there with his disciples. So Judas, having got a cohort and servants from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon him, went out and said to them, ‘Whom are you looking for?’ They answered him, ‘Jesus the Nazarene.’ Jesus says to them, ‘I AM.’ Now Judas his betrayer was standing with them. And when he said to them, ‘I AM’, they went back and fell to the ground. So Jesus asked them again, ‘Whom are you looking for?’ They said, ‘Jesus the Nazarene.’ Jesus answered, ‘I told you the I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go away.’ That the word which he had spoken might be fulfilled, ‘I have not lost any of those you have given me.’ Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the slave of the chief priest and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchos. Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword into its scabbard. Shall I not drink the cup which my Father has given me?’ So the cohort and the tribune and the servants of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him, and led him away to Annas first."
