Archangel Michael Icon, 6x7.5"

This stunning historical icon of the Archangel Michael is a faithful reproduction of the original painted in Constantinople in the 1300s. It depicts him in a traditional frontal pose wearing a chiton and a himation. He holds a scepter in his right hand, and in his left transparent globe of the world, indicating the authority and responsibility that have been delegated to him as chief of the bodiless powers. The globe itself bears a cross on the top and the gold Greek initials for “Christ Just Judge,” together with a depiction of a lion. These images likewise remind the church of Holy Michael’s role in the Last Days and his triumph over the evil one.  

The Archangel Michael is the warrior of God, and in any given instance of heavenly warfare is likely present fighting for Him. In icons, Michael can always be identified by his soldier's attire, his armor, and the sword he wields. Also, Michael is frequently clothed in some shade of red. The color red can symbolize power, war, blood, and sacrifice: all appropriate to the angel who is engaged in warfare. His liturgical hymns refer to him as "the Commander of the bodiless hosts." He holds a flaming sword in one hand, a reference to the angel who guards the Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis, and an orb in his other hand, symbolizing his authority as the supreme Archangel.
