St. John the Evangelist did not only author a Gospel, but was a much beloved Apostle and minister of Jesus. He and his brother James were both fishermen and both called to Jesus at the same time and place. Jesus also gave him the surname "Boanerges," Son of Thunder.

St. John witnessed the Transfiguration and remained at Jesus’ side when He was crucified. It was Jon who Jesus, as He died, trusted with the care of His mother Mary.

After Jesus’ Ascension, John became a church leader in Ephesus. He wrote his Gospel while there near the end of his life. John is also said to to have authored the Book of Revelation not long after. The only Apostle who was not martyred, St. John died a natural death in 100 AD.

The Gospel of St. John, the latest of the four Gospels, seems to have been written specifically to convince readers that Jesus is the ture Song of God and the path to salvation. Our being saved through the Resurrection is especially emphasized.

In the icon he holds the Gospel, which identifies him as an Evangelist.

This icon was painted by Fr. Theodore Koufos of blessed memory. Offered by permission.
