Christ the High Priest (Whirledge) Icon, 4x6"

In this icon, a detail from the Apostles' Communion icon often seen in the sanctuaries of Orthodox Churches, Christ is depicted as the High Priest and prototypical celebrant the Mystical Supper of the Holy Eucharist. In the words of the Divine Liturgy:

"You are the One Who both offers and is offered, the One Who is received and is distributed, O Christ our God, and to You we offer up glory, with Your Father, Who is without beginning, and Your all-holy and good and life-creating Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen." – Prayer of the Cherubic Hymn

We see Christ holding the chalice of his own Body and Blood, offering it to us while he receives the same offering from us. This paradox is at the heart of our Christian faith, and by this mystery we are cleansed, healed, and sanctified. This powerful image is a reminder and a celebration of this truth of our redemption.
