“In the beginning…”

Cecilia Balog was inspired to open The Paschal Lamb while working as a secretary at a local parish in the mid 1980’s.  People would call to inquire about finding gifts for First Communion, Confirmation, and other sacramental occasions, but there was no Catholic store nearby. Since she had always had an interest in Catholic literature, she decided to open her own Catholic bookstore and gift shop, along with her friends Donna Biegler and Roslyn Barry. All three women were military wives, representing the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard respectively.

The original shop was a 500 square foot space, sublet from a real estate company, in the Jermantown Square Shopping Center in Fairfax, Virginia.  The Paschal Lamb opened its doors on November 5, 1987, truly on a shoestring, with used bookcases from the University of Maryland bookstore and lots of secondhand fixtures. None of the women had any retail experience before starting the store and on opening day they were still reading the cash register manual! But it wasn’t long before the business was blessed with a loyal following.

As time went on, The Paschal Lamb expanded three times.  The shop is still located in the same lovely shopping center, under the original ownership, and occupies an inviting and comfortable 2,300 square foot space.

Deo Gratias!
